Atova EZ

Generic Name: Atorvastatin and Ezetimibe
Dosage Form: Tablet
TG Name: Cardiovascular

1. What is ATOVA® EZ?
ATOVA® EZ contains Atorvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor and Ezetimibe, a selective inhibitor of intestinal cholesterol and related phytosterols absorption.
Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin belongs to Statin group. It is a HMG-CoA reductase enzyme inhibitor. By inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, it prevents the production of cholesterol in the liver.
Ezetimibe
Cholesterol absorption inhibitor. It works by preventing cholesterol from being absorbed in the intestine. It is the most commonly used non-statin agent.

2. How ATOVA® EZ works in our body?
ATOVA® EZ has a complementary Mechanism of Action which treats 2 sources of LDL-C. ATOVA® EZ,

  • Works in the liver to reduce the cholesterol that the body makes naturally
  • In the digestive tract, it helps block the absorption of cholesterol that comes naturally from food
  • Atorvastatin of ATOVA® EZ lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver
  • Ezetimibe of ATOVA® EZ reduces blood cholesterol by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol by the small intestine

3. What are the indications of ATOVA® EZ?
Primary Hyperlipidemia
ATOVA® EZ is indicated for the reduction of elevated total cholesterol (Total-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), Apo-lipoprotein B (Apo-B), triglycerides (TG), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), and to increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in patients with primary (heterozygous familial and non-familial) hyperlipidemia or mixed hyperlipidemia.
Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH)
ATOVA EZ is indicated for the reduction of elevated Total-C and LDL-C in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) or if such treatments are unavailable.

4. What are the dosage & administration of ATOVA® EZ?
The dosage ranges of ATOVA® EZ is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily. The recommended starting dose of ATOVA® EZ is 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg daily. ATOVA® EZ can be administered as a single dose at any time of the day, with or without food. The recommended starting dose for patients who require a larger reduction in LDL-C (greater than 55%) is 10/40 mg daily. After initiation and/or upon titration of ATOVA® EZ, lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 or more weeks and dosage adjusted accordingly.
Patients with Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia
The dosage of ATOVA® EZ in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10/40 mg or 10/80 mg daily. ATOVA® EZ should be used as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) in these patients or if such treatments are unavailable.
Patients with Hepatic Impairment
ATOVA® EZ is contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in hepatic transaminase levels.
Patients with Renal Impairment
A history of renal impairment may be a risk factor for statin-associated myopathy. These patients need closer monitoring for skeletal muscle effects. In patients with renal impairment, no dosage adjustment of ATOVA® EZ is necessary.

5. What are the contraindications of ATOVA® EZ?
Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of hepatic transaminase levels. Hypersensitivity to any component of ATOVA® EZ.

6. What are the adverse effects of ATOVA® EZ?
Common side effects are rhabdomyolysis, myopathy, liver enzyme abnormalities, myalgia, abdominal pain, increased hepatic enzymes.

7. What would be the storage condition of ATOVA® EZ?
Do not store above 30°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep in a dry place. Protect from light & keep out of the reach of children.
