Pharmacology:

Psyllium Husk also referred to as Psyllium is derived from the husks of the seeds of Plantago ovata. It contains up to 70% of soluble and 30% of insoluble fibers. Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk is capable of absorbing up to 40 times of water of its own weight and part of its activity can be attributed to its action as a simple bulking agent. It swells as it absorbs water in the bowel and the increased bulk in the bowel helps regulate bowel movement. It also softens stools and makes them pass through the bowel more easily which helps relieve constipation. Soluble fiber content of Psyllium (Ispaghula) Husk has the ability to bind with bile acids – an important component in the digestion of fat found in our body from cholesterol. This process lowers circulating blood cholesterol level by excretion of those fats.
