Ezylax Syrup

LAXATIVES: Lactulose

Indication

Management of Constipation, hepatic encephalopathy. 

Contraindication

Since lactulose solution contains galactose, it is contraindicated in patients who require a low galactose diet.

Dosage & Administration

Constipation:

Starting dose

Adults   : 3-6 teaspoonful daily

Children 6-14 years : 3 teaspoonful daily

Children 1-5 years : 2 teaspoonful daily

Infants   : 1 teaspoonful daily

Maintenance dose

Adults   : 1.5-6 teaspoonful daily

Children 6-14 years : 1-2 teaspoonful daily

Children 1-5 years : 1-2 teaspoonful daily

Infants   : ½-1 teaspoonful daily

Hepatic encephalopathy : 30-50 ml 3 times daily

Side Effect

Lactulose may produce gaseous distention with flatulence or belching and abdominal discomfort. Excessive dosage can lead to diarrhea with potential complications such as loss of fluids, hypokalemia, and hypernatremia. Nausea and vomiting have been reported.

Precaution

Care should be taken in patients with lactose intolerance or in diabetic patients because of the presence of free galactose and fructose.

Pregnancy Category B. Ezylax should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when lactulose solution is administered to a nursing woman.

Drug Interaction

Not known drug interactions. Other laxatives should not be used, especially during the initial phase of therapy for portal-systemic encephalopathy because the loose stools resulting from their use may falsely suggest that adequate lactulose dosage has been achieved.

Presentation

Ezylax 100 ml Solution: Each carton contains a bottle having Ezylax 100 ml oral concentrated solution.
