ANTIBIOTICS: Cefuroxime Axetil
Indication
1.Upper and lower respiratory tract infections, such as acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis media, tonsillitis & pharyngitis.
2. Skin & soft tissue infections such as peritonitis, wound infections and impetigo.
3. Urinary tract infections such as pyelonephritis and cystitis.
4. Gonorrhoea.
5. Septicemia.
6. Meningitis.
7. Prophylaxis against infections in abdominal, pelvic, orthopedic, cardiac, pulmonary, oesophageal & vascular surgery.
Dosage & Administration
Adults (>13 years)
(may be administered without regard to meals)
Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis – 250 mg bid – 10 days
Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis – 250 mg bid – 10 days
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis – 250 or 500 mg bid – 10 days
Secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis – 250-500 mg bid – 5-10 days
Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections – 250-500 mg bid – 10 days
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections- 125-250 mg bid- 7-10 days
Uncomplicated gonorrhoea – 1000 mg – Single dose.
Children who can swallow tablets
Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis – 125 mg bid – 10 days
Acute otitis media – 250 mg bid – 10 days
Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis – 250 mg bid – 10 days.
Pediatric patients (3 months to 12 years)
Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis – 10 mg/kg/day bid – 10 days
Acute otitis media – 15 mg/kg/day bid – 10 days
Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis – 15 mg/kg/day bid – 10 days
Impetigo – 15 mg/kg/day bid – 10 days
Side Effect
Cefuroxime treatment has been rarely associated with pseudomembranous colitis. Cefuroxime has been associated with nausea and vomiting in a small number of patients.
Drug Interaction
No interactions of this kind have been reported.
Precaution
Special care is indicated in patients who have experienced an allergic reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics because there is a risk of cross-sensitivity. As with all beta-lactam antibacterial agents, serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions have been reported. In case of severe hypersensitivity reactions, treatment with cefuroxime must be discontinued immediately and adequate emergency measures must be initiated.
Preparation
Axet-125 Tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 125 mg.
Axet-250 Tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 250 mg.
Axet-500 Tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 500 mg.
Axet Suspension: Each 5 ml suspension contains Cefuroxime Axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 125 mg.
Axet 750 mg IV/IM Injection: Each vial contains Cefuroxime Sodium BP sterile powder for Injection equivalent to Cefuroxime 750 mg..
