ANTIBIOTICS: Cefpodoxime Proxetil
Indication
Upper respiratory tract infections, Lower respiratory tract infections, Urinary tract infections including gonorrhoea, Skin & soft tissue infections, Gynecological infections, Acute otitis media, Childhood infections.
Contraindication
Cefpodoxime proxetil is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or to the Cephalosporin antibiotics.
Dosage & Administration
Children: Pedicef Suspension may be given to the pediatric patients without regard to meals. The recommended dose is given as a single dose or twice daily for 5-14 days according to the severity of the infections as follows:
15 days – 6 month – 4 mg/kg – every 12 hours
6 months – 2 years – 40 mg – every 12 hours
3 – 8 years – 80 mg – every 12 hours
Over 9 years – 100 mg – every 12 hours
For the patients with severe renal impairment (Creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min), the dosing intervals should be increased to 24 hourly. For the patients with liver cirrhosis, no dose adjustment is necessary.
Side Effect
Cefpodoxime has very few side effects. The side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, cough etc. In children, fungal skin rash is more than adults.
Drug Interaction
Antacids: Concomitant administration of high doses of antacids (Sodium bicarbonate and aluminium hydroxide) or H2 blockers reduce peak plasma level by 24% to 42% and the extent of absorption by 27% to 32%, respectively.
Nephrotoxic drugs: Close monitoring of renal function is advised when Cefpodoxime proxetil is administered concomitantly with compounds of known nephrotoxic potential.

Pedicef 50 ml Suspension: Each bottle contains Cefpodoxime proxetil powder for preparing 50 ml Suspension.
Pedicef DS 50 ml Suspension: Each bottle contains Cefpodoxime proxetil powder for preparing 50 ml double strength Suspension.
