What is Jardian®?
Jardian® is a preparation of Empagliflozin. Empagliflozin is a drug of the gliflozin class, approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. It is an inhibitor of the sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2), and causes sugar in the blood to be excreted by the kidneys and eliminated in urine.
What is the indications of Jardian®?
Jardian is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise for the treatment of type-2 diabetes. It can be given alone or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents. It is also indicated for reduction in cardiovascular risk in type-2 diabetic patients.
How Jardian® works in our body?
Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor, a drug class which helps to stop sodium-glucose transports reabsorbing glucose that have been filtered out of the blood by the kidneys, back into the blood. It allows a significant amount of sugar to be removed through urination. The SGLT2 transports are responsible for reabsorbing 90 per cent of the glucose that is reabsorbed into the blood.
Who is Jardian® suitable for?
Jardian® is recommended as a treatment for type 2 diabetes under the following conditions:
- When diet and exercise do not provide adequate glycemic control
- When metformin is not appropriate due to patient intolerance
- It is the only oral anti diabetic agent approved to reduce the risk of CV Death in Type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular risk.
Jardian® is also recommended alongside metformin if a patient is at significant risk of hypoglycemia or cannot take a sulfonylurea. It can also be taken with either metformin or a sulfonylurea.
Who should not take Jardian ® ?
One should not take Jardian® if he or she has:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Severe kidney problems
Before taking Jardian®, please inform your doctor :
- Have kidney problems
- Are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
- Are breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed
- Have liver problems
- Have low blood pressure
- Take blood pressure medication
- Have high cholesterol levels
- Have a history of urinary tract infections
How Jardian® is supplied?
Jardian® 10 Tablet: Box containing 20 tablets in blister strips. Each film coated tablet contains Empagliflozin INN 10 mg.
Jardian® 25 Tablet: Box containing 10 tablets in blister strips. Each film coated tablet contains Empagliflozin INN 25 mg.
