Indications
Cerebrovascular diseases †e.g. from ischaemia due to stroke, where Citicoline accelerates the recovery of consciousness and overcoming motor deficit. Head Trauma of varying severity: In a clinical trial, Citicoline accelerated the recovery from postâ€traumatic coma and the recuperation of walking ability, achieved a better final functional result and reduced hospital stay. Cognitive disorders of diverse aetiology †e.g. senile cognitive impairment which is secondary to degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease) and to chronic cerebral vascular disease. Citicoline improves scores on cognitive evaluation scales and slowed the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease †Citicoline has also been shown to be effective as coâ€therapy for Parkinson’s disease. Citicoline increases striatal dopamine and tyrosine hydroxylase synthesis.
Dosage & Administration
For immediate treatment of stroke due to a clot (ishchemic stroke): 500mg-2000mg of Citicoline per day starting within 24 hours of stroke.
For ongoing disease of the blood vessels that serve the brain (chronic cerebro-vascular disease): 600mg of Citicoline per day.
For decline in thinking skills due to age: 1000-2000 mg of Citicoline per day.
For glaucoma:1000mg per day.
Side Effects
The most common side effects associated with using Citicoline are: headache, irregular heartbeat, diarrhea, low blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadness, vomiting, nausea. The severe side effects which are very rare include: tightening of the chest, closing of the throat, severe skin rash, hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat and mouth.
Precautions
Citicoline is known to cause increased dizziness and drowsiness in users. As a result, it is strongly recomanded that users do not operate any type of machinery throughout the course of treatment.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation
There is inadequate evidence of safe use of citicoline in human pregnancy. Citicoline should be used in pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefits justify the potential risks.
Drug Interaction
Citicoline potentiates the effects of Levodopa.Citicoline must not be used with medicines containing Mecloophenoxate or (Centrophenoxine).
Storage
Do not store above 30 °C. Keep away from light and out of the reach of children.
